A lot of those must have been made. Yes. But how many of them survived? I was asked this while rummaging around in a vintage jewellery shop. There are old pieces of glass and Bakelite – not outrageously rare but impressive because their value is in the beauty of their fragility. Though many were made, only few have survived and reached us in our today’s world. Use, fragility, lack of appreciation, a fall out of fashion, has rendered lots and lots of them extinct. Their unique power of survival is their glory. It is a success story. Welcome to the full moon of August. And it is a Super Full Moon. It is happening on the 12th of August, 2022, and taking place at 19 degrees and 21 minutes of Aquarius, at 01:35 GMT.
The sun in Leo shines our unique personhood reflected in the light of the moon in Aquarius, sings of group dynamics and societal power. The whole thing could flow effortlessly and harmoniously, from the one to the many, but it doesn’t. It is squared by the nodes in Taurus and Scorpio, further aggravated and disrupted by Mars and Uranus. To make matters worse, we have Saturn almost conjunct this full moon.
Come the 3 of Swords to make this point painfully clear. So rather than summertime culminating in joy and frivolity, we have seriousness and maturity. Fear, anxiety, uneasiness and an inner turmoil will no doubt be included in the toxic mix dominating this August’s lunar transits. The restrictive negating power of Saturn next to the full moon – a reflective light – is also a realistic grounding power. Maybe we are not just imagining things. Notice all power-players during this full moon are in fixed signs. It means we will struggle to change our ways. Shifting our position to accommodate the new, or bending to allow for the unexpected, will be almost impossible. And yet we have to, if we want to survive. All the energies are having a fixed character which makes us struggle with immobility – in a physical, emotional or intellectual sense. The 3 Swords are hitting at the heart of the matter. We might be feeling trapped, stagnant, or repressed. In this group dynamic we are looking for the way out and into the future in order to save what is distinctly our special contribution, our special character, our special gifts into the greater whole.
In the 3 of Coins where Mercury is squaring what looks like Hebe, or Pallas, the notion of Saturn conjunct the Full Moon is reinforced. From Aquarius Saturn is squaring Mercury (which is indeed in Virgo) by sign. Our powers of communication will be harnessed to extract specialised knowledge. It means putting exclusive effort into organising, planning, clearing, tidying loose ends and finding solutions to problems, dealing with out immediate environment. We will have to isolate, distance or exclude ourselves from outside conditions in order to create. For value to materialise this will happen through restriction and negation, by cutting down on the superfluous. For the wisdom and higher knowledge to take shape we are asked to focus our efforts on our work within the workshop or studio. The outcome will be physically manifest in practical ways. Only what makes sense and what is absolutely necessary will come through.
Because it is a fight. We can keep our distance, and indeed the cards advise us to do so, but the war and competition is on going. Make no mistake. The fire of the 7 of Wands is real. Conflict is raging from within and from without. These are not calm energies. They have intensity and are formidable. What we are experiencing in August ‘22, is shaping our lives and we can’t take it lightly. The 7 of Wands is often interpreted as an order to hold our ground, not let go, defend our position, fight for what we really want. Set boundaries, defend our territory. Yes. It is the axis Leo/Aquarius. Heart energy opposite logic and rational thinking. Sun opposite the Moon. One and the many. It is pouring hot and cold. How not to loose yourself in the crowd. It is as if we have come a full circle. It is a war of survival and the many forms fixed energy takes. In the Alchemical Tarot that fight is shown to be particularly brutal and violent. It is also all consuming. Amongst the many similarities, in this instant, we are fighting for our uniqueness, our pride and that special detail that makes all the difference in life. In the heat of the battle, there will be losses, odd things will be happening, appearances could deceive, there will be extravagances and bizarre occurrences. Now more than ever. Yet, we should not loose focus. The battle will require us to make up things as we go along and move beyond any setbacks or roadblocks. We will have to bypass any doubts or ideas that we are not good enough, strong enough, capable or deserving. This is what makes the centrepiece of the 3 of Coins more prevalent. Fighting for our right to exists and thrive is underpinned by our personal strength to channel our resources, mental, physical, emotional towards our greater goal and think hard about the future. The Super Full Moon in Aquarius will certainly help us do that.
