New year, new month, new week, new moon, new you and me. It’s all happening. 2022, kicks off with momentum from the start. This particular new moon is very important, because it will colour the entire year. It happens on the 02 January, 2022, at 12 degrees and twenty minutes of Capricorn, and at 18:34 UK time. It takes place early in the year, and early in the chart, so it is a very initiatory energy, in a cardinal sign which is all about new beginnings. In earthy Capricorn, this is a manifesting power in the real world, with a pragmatic outlook and practical perspective. So here are three of the themes, and lessons, we will encounter again and again, and here is what we will feel compelled to resolve throughout January and the year ahead. The cards guiding us are: The Moon (XVIII), The Knight of Swords (12), and the 5 of Swords (5). We have already done our reflection on 2021, and now we are setting new intentions straight away. Yes. There is unfinished business. But we are already feeling the future in the cool darkness of the new moon.
As the sun and moon meet in the sky, we take a moment to draw inward in order to plan and organise. As the sun and the moon conjunct in Capricorn, our intentions and resolutions collide too. The self and our emotions get together. What do we want to be doing in the year ahead that matters to us, on one hand, and what do we need to resolve within the structures of our current situation, on the other, are the two aspects of life we are concerned with. We are now in Capricorn season, so whatever we choose to do, will be rather economical, will be looking for tangible growth, and by no way will be wasting time or energy. We will be taking a streamlining approach, with the eye on the price.
The power of The Moon energy is manifest in a card which is all about emotions. Fears that are associated with darkness and our ability to sense our environment in its totality are, explicitly, woven into this new moon. Not just visuals, but smells and sounds are also important. And now more than ever, all of our senses are alerted. We are going ahead with our goals and projects, not because we are full of exuberance and joy, but, rather, despite having those at our disposal. As we set goals we want to achieve, and ways in which we want to improve ourselves, we are feeling ambitious and eagerly motivated.
The Knight of Swords is unstoppable. There is quick and powerful action here we are dealing with. She is not taking no for an answer. The outcome might be a lot of trial and error coming up, yet the movement is ongoing. The new moon happens with Venus in retrograde in Capricorn, and Mercury soon to station retrograde and move from Aquarius back into Capricorn once again. So we can expect changes in what we think is valuable, or beautiful, in us and in others. How we experience belonging in groups and how we are separate. How our lives are organised in ways which exclude or include others. The role of agency is paramount. We will evaluate from a new perspective things we took for granted. Communication and our way of thinking, including our decision-making, will be unstable. Our aesthetics and our judgment will fluctuate, moving back and forth, re-visiting and re-examining issues from the past and looking for solutions, before moving forwards again with new knowledge and a new understanding.
The conflicting energies between The Moon and The Knight of Swords, is startling. We are at a cusp of a major breakthrough with enthusiasm and drive. To get there we need to work hard. There is work and effort, resilience and commitment, fortitude and courage involved in delivering our goals. The Knight of Swords is making this point abundantly clear. The greater obstacle we need to overcome is fear of the unknown, tells us The Moon. The danger is within us. We need to look after our selves and our well being. It’s a body and mind thing always, with The Moon. Our mental health and our emotions, will give us the strength we need to rely on in order to pursue goals, and to keep ourselves fit for victory. It is a long game but we are driven to climb to the top, and we are not letting go. We will stop at nothing to get what we want. Maybe we don’t want to, or maybe we can’t. The point is that we do have an action filled month building up, one of struggle and fast moving events, and one of emotions and mystery.
And it wont be easy either. The 5 of Swords points to conflict outside and within. Delivering against goals, in a practical and tangible way will involve being prepared to stand up for ourselves, speaking our truth, communicating our values with vigour, in a difficult and sometimes hostile environment. The nodes have just moved in the axis of Scorpio-Taurus. A financial material sector of the wheel, and a sector of cutting, of separating and of even possible poisoning. It will be a conflict between merging and the desire to go deep in with others (spiritually, emotionally, financially), against the need to keep things simple, clean, and engaged in the physical realm of the senses. On one, the watery, soluble, and nurturing, element of The Moon, will be confronted by the other, the sword of air element, intend on cutting and severing, as a way of thinking and doing. As Mars moves into Gemini later in the year to stay there for five to six months, and into 2023, let’s just say that the battle is not over. It will take aggression, perseverance, emotional fortitude, deceit and game play. It will not always be straightforward. However, with the 5 of Swords victory is possible. The most likely outcome is positive, but only after a long and tough battle.
Therefore, when you find yourself in the 5 of Swords, remember that The Moon is also true in existence, and so is The Knight of Swords. In other-words, as we battle for survival, conscious of our fears and mystical experiences, we still have what it takes to get through the obstacles and limitations to find what we are looking for, up in the higher realms, which is where the ambitious and resilient sea-goat is heading for.
